The Dawn of the Eco-Friendly Electric Vehicles in India

India’s most advanced engineering capabilities

The automobile industry is all set to witness the dawn of a new era. It’s not petrol, diesel or any other fuel but its electricity that has initiated the evolution in the two wheeler industry in India. With the rising cost of fuel at international and national stages, increasing levels of pollution and congestion in transport systems especially in urban areas, higher running and maintenance cost of vehicles, the electrically charged automobiles have very bright future in the area of personal transportation. India’s two-wheeler industry is the largest in the world, selling more than 20 million vehicles every year. Despite the second wave of Covid-19, in the pandemic-impacted year, data shows that in FY 2020, EV sales for two-wheelers in India increased by 21 percent and have projected an ambitious target of achieving 100 percent electrification by 2030.

In a report by India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) projects that the Indian EV market will grow at a CAGR of 36 percent till 2026. The EV two-wheeler industry to clock sales of over six million units by 2025. As per the report titled “India’s Electric Mobility Transformation” which pegs EV sales penetration in India at 80 percent for two-and three-wheelers by 2030. These targets, if achieved, could lead to a net reduction of 14 exajoules of energy and 846 million tons of CO2 emissions over the deployed vehicles lifetime. Electric vehicles sold until 2030 can cumulatively save 474 million tons of oil equivalent over their lifetime, worth US$207.33 billion.
